Free resource: celebrate Sham Ennessim and discover ancient Egypt

Introducing your students to different festivals and celebrations around the world is a great way to promote cultural diversity in the classroom!  Here are some free resources to start fostering a multicultural environment in your English class.

Sham Ennessim

Sham Ennessim, which means ‘smelling the breeze,’ is a very popular festival in Egypt, celebrated on the Monday after Coptic Easter (Egyptian Orthodox Christian Church). This ancient tradition marks the arrival of spring: families and friends gather for picnics along the Nile River, enjoy the flowers, and share traditional foods such as salted fish and coloured eggs, symbols of fertility and new life. Children fly kites and play games. The custom of preparing ‘Fesikh’ (salted fish) dates back to Ancient Egypt and is believed to protect against evil spirits.
