New Year’s activities in English for preschool, primary and secondary school students

January is an ideal time to return to the classroom calmly, resume routines, and start the year with activities that help students express themselves, reflect, and set small goals. The beginning of the year not only invites us to learn new content but also to look back, acknowledge how we feel, and think about where we want to go next.

At Milton Education we have prepared New Year’s resources in English adapted to Preschool, Primary and Secondary levels, with simple, meaningful and easy-to-implement activities that combine vocabulary, reflection and active learning from the first days of the term.

Preschool: Sorting sizes using New Year’s hats

For preschool children, we propose a hands-on, visual activity perfect for teaching English through play. Students color, cut out, and sort New Year’s party hats according to size (big/small), naturally reinforcing basic concepts.

This activity helps develop fine motor skills, attention span, and the ability to understand instructions in English, while introducing early mathematical concepts such as classification and comparison. It’s ideal for starting the term with a dynamic and accessible activity for everyone.

Primary: emotional reflection and goals for the new year

In Primary , the focus is on social-emotional learning (SEL). Through a guided worksheet, students reflect on:

  • How have you felt during the past year?
  • How do you feel about starting the new year?
  • A small personal goal that you would like to achieve

Before starting the activity, you can review key vocabulary such as last year, this year, and goal, helping students express personal ideas in English simply and meaningfully. It’s an ideal activity for developing writing skills, self-assessment, and emotional well-being at the beginning of the year.

Secondary: setting goals using the SMART method

For Secondary school students, we propose a goal-setting activity in English based on SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound). Students reflect on their goals for the new year and learn to formulate them clearly and realistically.

This resource can be used as a one-off activity at the beginning of the term or easily expanded into a longer project, dedicating time to explaining what SMART goals are, analyzing examples, and tracking objectives throughout the course. It’s a practical way to work on English, critical thinking, and personal planning simultaneously.

The start of the year is the perfect opportunity to combine language, reflection, and motivation. These New Year’s activities in English allow you to adapt the work to each educational stage, reinforce key vocabulary, and create a positive atmosphere from the very first days of class.
